What Is the Healthy pH Level of Your Skin?
Your skin doesn’t need to “squeak” to be clean. In fact, that tight, stripped feeling after washing may be your skin telling you that something isn’t quite right.
In this week’s Ask the Goat Lady, we’re talking about something most people never think about when choosing skin care: the pH level of your skin.
What Is a Healthy Skin pH?
Healthy skin generally sits around 4.5 to 5.5 on the pH scale, which means it naturally stays slightly on the lower end of the scale.
That balance isn’t an accident. The outer surface of your skin has what’s commonly called the acid mantle, a thin protective layer that works alongside your skin barrier. It helps your skin hold onto moisture and supports the natural environment where your skin’s microorganisms live.
In other words, your skin already has a pretty impressive protection system. Good skin care should work with it, not constantly fight against it.
What Happens When We Disrupt That Balance?
Some cleansers and skin-care products can temporarily raise the skin’s pH. Harsh cleansing, over-washing, and products that strip too much of the skin’s natural oils can also leave the skin barrier struggling to do its job.
You may notice:
- Tightness after washing
- Dry or flaky skin
- Redness or irritation
- Increased sensitivity
- Skin that simply feels uncomfortable
And here’s something I tell people all the time:
Your skin does NOT have to squeak to be clean.
That squeaky-clean feeling we were taught to look for isn’t necessarily a sign of healthier skin. Sometimes it’s a sign that we removed more than we needed to.
But Isn’t Soap Alkaline?
Yes — and this is important.
Real soap is naturally alkaline. That includes handcrafted goat milk soap.
I’m not going to tell you that goat milk soap has the same pH as your skin, because it doesn’t. There’s a lot more to a good bar of soap than simply looking at one pH number.
The entire formulation matters: how the soap is made, the oils and butters used, the amount of cleansing it provides, and how your skin feels afterward.
That’s one of the reasons I’m so particular about the way I formulate our goat milk skin-care products here at Cajun Corral Farm. My goal isn’t to make your skin feel scrubbed within an inch of its life. I want it clean while still feeling comfortable, soft, and cared for.
Start Paying Attention to Your Skin
The next time you wash your face or take a shower, notice how your skin feels afterward.
Does it feel comfortable?
Or are you immediately reaching for lotion because your skin feels tight?
Your skin talks to you more than you might realize. Sometimes we just need to start paying attention.
And the next time you’re shopping for skin care, look beyond the pretty label and the fragrance. Think about what that product is actually doing to your skin barrier and its natural pH balance.
That’s what Ask the Goat Lady is all about — taking skin care out of the marketing department and talking about what’s actually happening with your skin.
Have a Question for the Goat Lady?
Is there a skin-care question you’ve always wondered about? Maybe there’s an ingredient you keep seeing on labels and you have no idea what it does. Or maybe there’s a skin-care topic you’d like me to tackle in an upcoming Ask the Goat Lady video.
I want to hear it!
